Paul Leni directs this film adaptation of the Victor Hugo novel. Set in 17th century England, Gwynplaine Conrad Veidt performs in a travelling circus and is the star attraction as a result of a childhood punishment that has resulted in him having a fixed and grotesque smile. Ashamed of this disfigurement Gwynplaine only ever shows his smile when on stage. When it transpires that Gwynplaine is descended from royalty he is offered an opportunity to marry Duchess Josiana Olga Baclanova. However. agreeing to the marriage will mean turning his back on the circus as well as ending his relationship with Dea Mary Philbin, the only person that Gwynplaine feels is capable of truly loving him.

Environmental horror from the 1970s directed by John Frankenheimer. Dr. Robert Verne Robert Foxworth takes up a post with the Environmental Protection Agency to report on a dispute between a logging company and a Native American tribe who live by the banks of the Ossipee river. Verne's pregnant wife Maggie Talia Shire accompanies him in his new role. However, the Verne's grow increasingly concerned by the sight of damage to the local animal population. Meanwhile, elders belonging to the tribe claim that a spirit has been awoken as a result of the loggers' malpractice and it isn't long before everyone in the area realises that their lives are in danger.
