Nicolas Roeg directs this classic 1970s sci-fi drama in which David Bowie stars as an alien who arrives on Earth in search of water to save his own dying planet. Assuming the name Thomas Jerome Newton, he soon forms a lucrative partnership with patent attorney Oliver Farnsworth Buck Henry by creating revolutionary products. As their business develops into a hugely successful financial empire, Thomas plans to use the profits to build a ship that will return him to his home world. However, while he waits for his ship to be ready, he begins to fall prey to earthly pleasures and failings.

US horror directed by Joe Dante. The film follows Karen White Dee Wallace Stone, a female TV reporter who goes to an out-of-town retreat in order to recover from a traumatic encounter with a serial killer. Unfortunately, her attempt to get some rest and relaxation is ruined when it becomes clear that her fellow residents are all werewolves, leaving Karen in a desperate battle to survive as she frantically looks for a way to escape. The cast also includes Patrick MacNee, Christopher Stone and Belinda Balaski.

John Hurt stars as John Merrick, aka the elephant man, in this biographical drama directed by David Lynch. Brutalised in childhood for his deformities, Merrick has been ostracised throughout his life. When he is discovered by Doctor Frederick Treves Anthony Hopkins in Victorian London, Merrick is finally treated with the kindness and intelligence he deserves. Unfortunately, by awakening his true character the problems continue, for he can never lead a normal life.

The Andrew Lloyd WebberTim Rice rock opera about the life and death of Christ is brought to the big-screen after success on Shaftesbury Avenue and Broadway. The story of Christ's Ted Neely last week on Earth is told by a group of travellers who arrive in modern-day Jerusalem on a tour bus. Events are seen from the perspective of Apostle Judas, who betrays Jesus to the Judaic religious leaders in return for thirty pieces of silver. Songs include 'I Don't Know How to Love Him', 'Hosanna', 'Herod's Song' and the now-famous theme tune.
